The pattern · 1979 to present
No full-scale war since Vietnam. A different kind of expansion since.
China's last conventional military engagement abroad was the 1979 invasion of Vietnam — a costly, inconclusive operation that claimed up to 26,000 Chinese lives in 27 days. Since then, Beijing has not fought a conventional war. Instead it has used grey-zone tactics: island-building, coast guard harassment, economic coercion, and incremental territorial control. The method changed. The direction did not.

01
Incorporation of Tibet
1950
40,000 PLA troops overwhelmed a Tibetan army of fewer than 10,000. Tibet was annexed and incorporated into the PRC. The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959. Beijing calls it "peaceful liberation."

02
Korean War Intervention
1950–1953
300,000+ Chinese "volunteers" entered Korea and pushed UN forces back to the 38th parallel. Ended in armistice with North Korea preserved. China suffered 400,000–1 million casualties. Beijing claims victory; strategically it was a costly stalemate.
Won
03
China–Burma Border Campaign
1960–1961
PLA operations expelled Kuomintang remnant forces sheltering in Burma. A joint Sino-Burmese campaign secured the southwestern border and formalized the boundary treaty.
Won
04
Sino-Indian War
1962
A swift PLA offensive seized Aksai Chin in the west and advanced into Arunachal Pradesh in the east. China declared a unilateral ceasefire and withdrew from Arunachal but retained Aksai Chin — an area the size of Switzerland. India's humiliation drove its nuclear programme.
Won
05
Battle of the Paracels
1974
Chinese naval forces seized the Crescent Group of the Paracel Islands from South Vietnam. 74 Vietnamese sailors were killed. The United States, bound by treaty to South Vietnam, did not intervene. China has controlled the Paracels ever since.
Won
06
Johnson South Reef Skirmish
1988
PLA Navy forces attacked Vietnamese vessels at Johnson South Reef in the Spratly Islands. 64 Vietnamese sailors were killed. China seized the reef and several surrounding features, establishing its first foothold in the southern Spratlys.

07
Nathu La & Cho La Clashes
1967
Two border skirmishes with India in Sikkim. Chinese forces attacked Indian positions at Nathu La and Cho La passes and were repelled both times. India held its ground. PLA casualties were substantially higher than India's.
Lost
08
Sino-Soviet Border Conflict
1969
Armed clashes over Zhenbao Island on the Ussuri River. Soviet forces used superior firepower and armour to repel Chinese attacks. The incident pushed China toward rapprochement with the United States — Nixon's 1972 visit was partly a consequence.

09
Sino-Vietnamese War
1979
200,000+ PLA troops invaded northern Vietnam to "punish" it for toppling China's Khmer Rouge ally in Cambodia. Vietnam's battle-hardened army — fresh from defeating the United States — inflicted severe casualties. China withdrew after 27 days having seized no territory. Up to 26,000 Chinese dead. Beijing claimed victory.

Third Taiwan Strait Crisis
1995–1996
China fired missiles near Taiwan to intimidate voters ahead of its first direct presidential election. The U.S. deployed two carrier battle groups — the largest American naval deployment in Asia since Vietnam. China halted the exercises. Taiwan held its election.

South China Sea
2012–present
China seized Scarborough Shoal from the Philippines in 2012, built artificial islands across the Spratlys from 2014, and militarised them with missiles and airstrips. A 2016 UN tribunal ruled China's claims had "no legal basis." China ignored the ruling. Water cannon attacks on Philippine resupply vessels continue as of 2026.

12
Doklam Standoff
2017
PLA troops began constructing a road in Doklam — a territory disputed between China and Bhutan but considered strategically vital by India. Indian troops intervened. A 73-day standoff ended with both sides withdrawing. China subsequently increased infrastructure construction in the area.

Galwan Valley Clash
2020–present
PLA forces attacked Indian troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 in the deadliest Sino-Indian clash since 1967. 20 Indian and at least 4 Chinese soldiers were killed in hand-to-hand fighting. Both sides have since built extensive infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control. Tensions remain unresolved.

14
Taiwan Strait Escalation
2022–present
Following Nancy Pelosi's Taiwan visit in August 2022, China conducted its largest military exercises around Taiwan since 1996 — surrounding the island with live-fire drills. Regular incursions into Taiwan's Air Defence Identification Zone have continued since. Xi Jinping has not ruled out force to achieve reunification.
Method
Includes direct PLA deployments and military actions beyond Chinese-administered territory since 1949. Proxy support (Vietnam War, Angola, etc.) and economic coercion are excluded. Outcomes reflect strategic result. The Korean War is listed as "disputed" because Beijing claims victory while independent analysis characterises it as a costly stalemate. The 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War is counted as a draw: China withdrew without achieving its stated objectives despite claiming victory.
